The Baron of Otranto

The book presents, for the first time in Italy, the translation of The Baron of Otranto written by Voltaire in 1769.

The story tells of the Turk Abdallà who conquers Otranto and ousts the baron who resides there from the castle. In this comic opera the protagonist is a libertine Turk who, after having deposed the young and naive nobleman, will be seduced by the women of Salento and, in particular, will not be able to resist the charm of the splendid Irene. The opera, written in French but with some parts in Italian, was never performed.

The volume contains, in the appendix, a story by Renato Giordano inspired by the dynamics that led Voltaire to write this work.

DIRECTOR, AUTHOR, MUSICIAN AND CULTURAL WORKER.
Renato Giordano was born in Rome on 22 April 1953. He has around 110 theater directions to his credit and has written 29 comedies for the stage, all of which have been performed.
